Freshmen at public universities in
Illinois will be able to enroll in a
homeland security class and win
scholarships if they are interested in
pursuing a major in the field.
Illinois Gov. Rod R. Blagojevich said
Monday he will give $75,000 to Northern
Illinois University to develop a core
homeland security studies course. The
course will be available on the Internet
to students at all Illinois state
universities.
Caterpillar, the international
construction company, will provide a
total of $25,0000 in scholarships to
students taking the course.
The class is part of a broader program
in Illinois that aims to develop
baccalaureate, master's and doctoral
programs in homeland security, as well
as concentrations and minors, according
to a press release issued by
Blagojevich.
The release said Illinois also plans to
launch some 18-credit-hour certificate
programs for undergraduate students.
"By making higher education a pillar of
the Illinois homeland security industry,
we're ensuring the work force of
tomorrow has the knowledge, talent and
skill to continue pioneering in this
critical field," Blagojevich said in a
prepared statement.
Homeland security-related academic
programs will focus on the areas of
engineering, chemistry, biology and
emergency management, the release said.
Students will also develop an
understanding of disaster planning and
response; bioterrorism preparedness; and
political, legal, psychological and
social aspects of terrorism. |
